iFixit Posts iPhone 5 Teardown: iPhone 5 Internals are Packed Beautifully but Old Vibrator is Annoying

iPhone 5 has already hit the shelves in Australia which falls in the time zone where  it’s already tomorrow. iFixit just put its hands on new iPhone from Apple Store to post first teardown of iPhone 5 after its release.

iFixit co-founder Luke Soules trekked halfway around the world to Melbourne, Australia to be one of the first to receive the iPhone 5. Then, he flew like the wind back to MacFixit Australia’s office and started taking apart our unit. The process is now well underway.

It means that iFixit’s teardown process of iPhone 5 is still under way and they will update their post time to time for the entire iPhone community and obviously we will follow them and update our post as well.

The iPhone 5 body still uses the same the 5-point pentalobe screw that was first introduced by Apple in their iPhone 4, which requires a special screwdriver to take apart the iPhone 5.

The battery of the iPhone 5 is almost of the same capacity as we have already experienced in our iPhone 4S units; it slightly goes from 5.3Whr @ 3.7V to 5.45Whr @ 3.8V, equal to 1432 mAh to 1434 mAh.

According to iFixit;

“Apple is very concerned with making sure that all the connectors are firmly seated and won’t rattle lose over time.”

Then iFixit comes to the logic board of iPhone 5 which shows Apple’s own powerful A6 processor.

The Lightning connector assembly, which includes the headphone jack and loudspeaker, comes out next.

It seems inevitable that Apple was going to switch its charging source eventually. There’s no way they could have crammed a 30-pin dock connector into this assembly.

iFixit also comments on iPhone 5’s vibration motor with a little bit surprise and notes that new device uses the old  rotational motor with a counterweight as compared to iPhone 4S’ linear-oscillating vibrator. Notably, linear-oscillating vibrator is “quieter and less annoying” so iFixit expressed its surprise over why Apple slip backed to the less chic design.

iClarified posts major highlights of new device deduced from iFixit’s teardown of iPhone 5:

● The unibody back case is reminiscent of the iPhone 3GS, while it maintains the square edges of the iPhone 4.
Because the iPhone 5 is opened front-to-back, replacing a cracked screen is going to be easier than ever.
iPhone 5 Battery: 3.8V – 5.45Wh – 1434mAh. Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G. Standby time: Up to 225 hours.
● Near the top of the case, we find a few antenna connectors firmly screwed to the inside of the case.
● We can now confirm that the Qualcomm MDM9615M is the 4G LTE processor powering this new feature.
● The lower microphone (1 of 3 inside the iPhone) is squeezed between the Lightning connector and headphone jack, and hides behind what appears to be a second speaker grille.
● Unlike the iPhone 4S, which used a linear-oscillating vibrator, Apple has gone back to a rotational motor with a counterweight.
● Apple’s newest iteration of its classic home button is sporting an integrated metal support bracket, hopefully greatly strengthening the oft-used switch.
